Shells

Otto Frödin’s excavations

All shells in the assemblage have not been registered in the database. Shells are discussed by Hans Browall under the heading of “other faunal specimens” (Browall 2011:337) and the shells found in Frödin’s excavations are listed in one table (tabell 178), containing only eight records. The shells from these excavations were not studied by any specialist.

15 records of shell have been registered in this database. None seem to come from the macrofossil series of samples analysed by Hans Göransson and the species of only one has been identified (snail). Birgitta M. Johansson analysed shells from the series of samples in Göransson’s work. 77 remains of molluscs were included in her study, consisting of species from five different ecological settings – woodland, catholic, open country, marsh and ditch. One of the open country species, Tricha hispida, hairy snail, accounting for 9 or 10 of the specimens found is specifically associated with man-made agricultural landscapes (Johansson 1995:100 f).

Many more shells were observed in the samples registered by the present project as soil samples, but they have not been extracted from the samples and not studied by any specialist.
