Holocaust Remembrance Day 2023

The Swedish History Museum commemorates Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27, 2023 together with our sister museum, the Swedish Holocaust Museum.

An artwork by Smash Studio will be shown on the facade of the museum from Thursday 26 January at 12.00 to Friday 27 January at 22.00. It is outdoors and free of charge.

The showing of the artwork is a collaboration between the Historical Museum, the Swedish Holocaust Museum, the Raoul Wallenberg Academy and the World Jewish Congress. It has been shown at the Synagogue in Stockholm as part of Nobel Week Lights 2022.

About the artwork:

The artwork “Heroes” weaves together abstract animation and a sound experience – inspired by true humanitarians.

The artists have been inspired by three people. One of these is Raoul Wallenberg, a Swedish diplomat who saved thousands of Jews in Budapest from the Holocaust. Another is Elie Wiesel, the 1986 Nobel Peace Prize winner. Dag Hammarskjöld, the winner of the 1961 Nobel Peace Prize, is also honored in the artwork.

The artwork contains spoken quotes from Dag Hammarskjöld, Elie Wiesel and Raoul Wallenberg together with light animations consisting of thousands of small illuminated points of light. These individual glowing particles combine to create something greater than themselves: geometric patterns and shapes that move through abstract and organized forms as they form before our eyes.
