Viking Summer 2023

Welcome to the Swedish History Museum this summer. Below you will find information about guided tours in English, as well as activities for children and families. All activities are included in museum admission.

Guided tours for adults in English

June 27 – August 27

Vikings never cease to fascinate. Join us on a journey of discovery in the exhibition The Viking World. Meet the people of the Viking Age through unique objects that bear witness to death rituals, the power of fortune-tellers, the art of shipbuilding and long-distance voyages.

Tickets to guided tours are included in museum admission. Limited space – first come, first served. It is not possible to pre-book tickets.

Viking for a day

June 27 – August 27

This summer, the museum’s green courtyard is filled with activities for adults and children of all ages! Come and try Viking Age crafts and games, bake Viking Age bread, test your balance on the islet walk or relax under the large willow tree. Listen to stories from Norse mythology or join a tour of the exhibition The Viking World.

Bake Viking bread

Tuesday – Sunday 11.00 – 15.00
Bake your own Viking bread over an open fire and get a taste of the Viking Age. Drop in.

Be a blacksmith

Tuesday – Sunday 10.30–11.00, 12.00–12.30 and 14.30–15.00
Peek into the forge and try your hand at forging jewelry, hooks and more, with the help of our blacksmith.

Viking Age crafts

Tuesday – Sunday 10.00 – 16.00
Create your own rune amulett, create clay beads to take home, or create metal jewellery. Speak with our knowledgeable staff about how Viking Age clothing was made. Different crafts are offered on different days. Drop in.

Viking Age activities

Tuesday  – Sunday 10.00 – 16.00
Play ancient games, shoot a bow and arrow and try on Viking Age clothes. Challenge a friend in a tug of war and test your senses in our smell-and-feel challenge. You can also visit the kitchen garden, relax on the grass, and listen to Old Norse myths.

Children’s story time (in Swedish)

Tuesday – Sunday 15.00 – 15.30
Meet the museum’s own “völva”—a practitioner of magic divination and prophecy—and follow along into the world of fairy tales. Hear Old Norse myths and stories and get your own Viking name.

We will gather under the willow tree. Drop in, registration is not required. (In case of rain or poor weather, the storytime will be moved into the exhibition The Viking World.) Please note that the stories will be in Swedish.

Buy our annual pass

We offer an annual pass for SEK 450 that is valid for all museums within the National Historical Museums. It is valid at:

The pass gives you free admission to all our permanent and temporary exhibitions, as many times as you wish during the year. You can buy the card at each museum shop/reception. The pass cannot currently be purchased online.

About the annual pass
