Speaking memories

The deep interplay between the way in which collective memory effects our understanding of human reality, and inversely the way in which the contemporary context solidifies collective memory is profoundly felt within Jewish life in Europe. The interplay often goes unexamined, and is left to the happenstance of occurrences. Stockholm is a place in which there can be a dynamic platform for the blending of these two elements; a strong and profound presence of Holocaust survivors, and a generation of young intellectuals coming from societies throughout Europe who have taken upon themselves the serious study of Jewish sources and heritage. “Speaking Memories” is a day dedicated to this crucial encounter. Together these groups will examine the ways in which the past is represented in their various societies, and the day will provide the opportunity for contemporary thinkers to consider the way that memories can be brought forward to speak to current challenges and issues.
