Welcome to the Swedish History Museum at Narvavägen 17 in central Stockholm! Explore by yourself or with friends. Free admission up to 19 years of age and on Sundays students pay half price on admission.

Student Discount on Sundays!

Did you know that admission is only SEK 90 for students? The ticket gives you access to both the Swedish History Museum and the Economy Museum, located in the same building. The offer is valid every Sunday throughout the year upon presentation of a valid Mecenat card or equivalent student ID.

Viking Summer

This summer, the museum’s green courtyard comes alive with fun Viking-themed activities. Challenge your friends to a Viking duel, try your hand at archery, make simple jewellery, or simply relax in a deck chair.

Restaurant and café

While unwinding in the sunshine and listening to the soothing sound of the fountain, you can enjoy a coffee, tea, or a refreshing drink. Or treat yourself to a hearty lunch—coffee is included. On weekdays, there is plenty of space to sit and study, except during lunchtime and weekends when it tends to get a bit busier. Admission to the restaurant is free.

When Sweden became Sweden

Sweden has had kings and queens for a very long time. Below you can see a line of monarchs stretching all the way to the present day. But when did Sweden become a country? The answer is not straightforward, but during the Middle Ages it emerged as a unified kingdom.

Hair and Hairstyles in the Iron Age

In depictions of people from the Iron Age, one is struck by how carefully the hair is rendered. Even when the body is schematic, the faces roughly drawn, or the format very small, the hair and hairstyles are shown in clear detail.

What does an archaeologist do?

An archaeologist is a researcher who studies humanity’s past through material remains. This can include buildings, objects, graves, settlements, or other traces left by people. The purpose of archaeology is to understand past societies, their structure, ways of life, economy, beliefs, and technology.

What does an osteologist do?

An osteologist is a specialist in skeletons, both human and animal. The word "osteology" comes from the Greek osteon, meaning bone, and logos, meaning study – so it literally means "the study of bones."

The oldest object in the Swedish History Museum

Most of the objects housed in the Swedish History Museum’s collections originate from within the borders of present-day Sweden. None of them are older than approximately 14,000 years.

The man from Granhammar

The Granhammar man took an axe to the head and has become one of Sweden’s most well-known people from the Nordic Bronze Age.
