Accessibility

We work continuously to make the Swedish History Museum accessible to everyone. Read about accessibility options and any possible limitations during your visit.

Overview

  • The museum has parking spaces reserved for people with disabilities. The parking is located just to the right of the main stairs at Narvavägen 17, approximately 2 meters away. The surface of the parking area is cobblestone.
  • The entrance to the Swedish History Museum consists of stone steps with no ramp. To the right of the entrance stairs, there is an elevator.
  • Automatic door openers are available at the entrance with the elevator and in the entrance hall.
  • Folding chairs are available in the entrance hall and near the exhibitions.
  • There is a quiet room at the museum. Please ask at the information desk.
  • Guide dogs are welcome.
  • A hearing loop system is available in the auditorium, the Bifrost room, and the Baroque Hall.
  • The Swedish History Museum is a smoke-free environment. Smoking is not allowed in the Rosengården courtyard or in the large courtyard, including the balustrade.
  • The information and shop desks have a lowered section.
  • Strollers are allowed inside the museum, except in the Gold Room. There is a stroller parking area in the entrance hall.
  • Changing rooms are available in the accessible toilets on all floors.

Visitors with mobility impairments

Information about accessibility for visitors with limited mobility can be found here.

The Gold Room and the entrance floor are accessible for wheelchairs and mobility scooters. If you would like information about accessibility in the exhibitions on the second floor, please contact our information desk.

Parking for visitors with reduced mobility

The museum’s designated parking space for visitors with reduced mobility is located just to the right of the main staircase at Narvavägen 17. The surface of the accessible parking area is cobblestone.

Entrance with lift

Next to the parking area, there is a lift to the entrance floor. The door has automatic opening via a push button. The lift is monitored by camera.

Accessible toilets

Accessible toilets are available on all three floors of the museum.

The accessible toilet next to the entrance hall is 2.43 metres wide and 3.35 metres long. The toilet seat is mounted in the middle of the wall and has two support rails. The distance from the left wall to the rail is 80 centimetres, and from the right wall 95 centimetres.

Wheelchairs

If you have difficulty walking, two wheelchairs are available for loan at the information desk.

Lifts and ramps

Lifts provide access to all floors of the museum, although some are narrow. On the upper floor, high thresholds are equipped with ramps to improve accessibility.

Hearing loop

Available in the museum’s auditorium, the Baroque Hall, and in the Bifrost venue (both front and back sections).

Guided tours for visitors with hearing loss

To ensure a good experience of the exhibitions for visitors with hearing loss, you can book an adapted guided tour. Please contact bokningen@historiska.se

We also offer a digital guided tour of The Viking World exhibition with sign language interpretation.

Visitors with sight loss

Here you can find accessibility information for visitors who are blind or partially sighted.

Lighting in exhibitions

Some of our exhibitions may feel dark. This is necessary because many objects cannot be exposed to strong light. The museum offers tactile guided tours for groups. Please contact our staff to book a time.

In several of the museum’s exhibitions, audio guides are available free of charge for visitors with visual impairment at the information desk. The audio guides are available for many exhibitions in Swedish, English, German, French, Spanish, Russian, Finnish, and Italian.

Visitors with allergies

Here you can find information about accessibility for visitors with allergies.

Allergens in the museum

We strive to avoid allergenic materials in exhibitions and furnishings. Except in restrooms, scented cleaning products are not used.

Scents and dust

There are no allergenic plants inside the museum. During the production of new exhibitions, dust and strong odors may occasionally occur. If you are unsure, please contact us before your visit.

Lactose and gluten intolerance

The café can offer lactose- and gluten-free options.

Nut allergies

The café cannot guarantee that traces of nuts will not be present in the products.

Fur allergies

Only guide and assistance dogs are allowed inside the museum.
