New website makes Sweden’s history accessible

When did people first begin using runes? And how did the Vikings actually celebrate Christmas? Through more than 170 research-based articles in English, even more people can now learn about Swedish history – from the Stone Age to the Early Modern period.

With its new website, the Swedish History Museum is makes knowledge about Sweden’s history available in English. By highlighting topics requested by the public and by international audiences – such as Norse mythology and the gods of the Viking Age – the Swedish History Museum hopes to spark interest in history, both in Sweden and abroad.

“We have long had many international visitors to our website, and that number keeps growing. With the new English-language content, we want to share knowledge about Sweden’s history and cultural heritage, and we also hope to attract more people to visit the museum in Stockholm,” says Jennifer Lindblad, Project Manager and Communications Officer at the National Historical Museums, of which the Swedish History Museum is a part.

Over the past three years, around 30 staff members at the Swedish History Museum have worked on the museum’s new website. Subject experts have reviewed and updated roughly 170 knowledge articles. The content is now based on the latest research and is easier to understand. In addition, the texts have been translated into English to make knowledge about Swedish history even more accessible.
