Fungi

Otto Frödin’s excavations

These finds are discussed by Hans Browall (2011:343 ff; tabell 5, tabell 181, 182).

Mats P. Malmer’s excavations

Only one record of fungus has been noted in this database, a tinder fungus from the Trial trench. This is in stark contrast to the assemblage of 81 fungi registered during Frödin’s excavations (Browall 2011:343 ff).  This may well be associated with a general tendency towards deteriorated preservation in modern excavations due to environmental pollution (e.g. https://doi.org/10.1073/pnas.1609222113). The depth of the peat in the mire has also decreased by about half a metre since the beginning of the 20th century (see Möller & Mikaelsson 1979:5).
